We arrived in Perth Australia and Giddy kept bugging us to go sand boarding. Now we have previously gone sand boarding with friends during our New Mexico trip while visiting White Sands.
We travelled two hours north of Perth through the bushland to Nambung National Park where there were large white sand dunes.
This is a desert area along the west coast of Australia with the Indian Ocean in sight. The sand is calcium-based vs the standard silica at most beaches. Even in the hot sun, the sand is still cool to the touch, so walking barefoot was no issue. The wind was blowing slightly. We had to keep sunglasses on to not be sand blasted.
Giddy got his board and headed to the top of the tallest dune which was taller than most people’s houses. As Giddy headed down the slope, he tried to do a jump and landed head first into the sand. Fortunately, he is resin head so no permeant injuries. He complained of a headache, but we figured it would be short-lived and he was ready to go a second time after ten minutes.
This time he stayed on the board and made it to the bottom of the dune safely. We watched several others try their luck going down the dunes.
After sand boarding, we headed over to Hangover Bay to cool off in Indian Ocean. The water was chilly, and there was seaweed deposited on the beach. The beach sand was no longer white but a standard silica sand.
